Energy obtained from renewable sources is called green energy. Like wind energy or solar energy. Similarly, hydrogen is also a renewable source of energy which is available in large quantities and has no side effects on the environment.

What is the 'Green Petrol-Diesel' of the future, India has this treasure in abundance. The use of green energy is being promoted all over the world. (Canva)

New Delhi. Union Minister Hardeepu Puri spoke about green hydrogen in a recently organized TV program. He called it the fuel of the future. He said that green fuel (fuel prepared from renewable energy) will be available sooner or later at the price of fossil fuel (petrol-diesel) and this is going to happen soon. But what is green hydrogen or green fuel? Why is it being promoted? What is its future in India? Many such questions might be coming in people’s minds.

Today here you will get answers to all these questions. Starting with the first and basic question, what is green hydrogen? To know what green hydrogen is, it is important to first understand what hydrogen is. Hydrogen is a gas which is available in abundance in the atmosphere. 75 percent of the total mass of our universe is hydrogen. It is the lightest substance and is a cleaner alternative to methane, also known as natural gas. Hydrogen can be used as fuel. Hydrogen atoms are found on Earth from different sources. For example, water, plants, animals and humans.

Electrolysis is used to separate hydrogen from water. In this, water (H20) is broken into O2 and H2. In this way hydrogen is obtained to be used as fuel. This process is done by passing electricity through water. This electricity is generated with the help of fossil fuel. This means that hydrogen will certainly be a clean source of energy, but the process of making it will result in carbon emissions because the electricity used to make it was made from fossil fuels. Now, if the same electricity is made from renewable energy and then with its help hydrogen molecules are separated from oxygen in water, then it will be called green hydrogen.

Why is this the future?
As we said, not only on Earth, 75 percent of all the elements in the universe are hydrogen. Besides, it is also highly flammable. This means that it can be used as fuel comfortably. As the demand for banning fossil fuels and promoting clean sources of energy is rising across the world, the day is not far when hydrogen fuel will replace petrol and diesel. The electricity needed to build it will be obtained from wind energy and solar energy. The entire process of making hydrogen fuel will be carbon emission free or with very low carbon emissions. That is why it is being called the fuel of the future. However, a big problem in this is that this entire process will be very expensive, the solution for which is yet to be found.
