Vehicle sales record broken in Delhi! 8.2 lakh vehicles sold in 2025

Vehicle Sales 2025 In Delhi : The year 2025 has been historic for Delhi in terms of vehicle sales. This time there have been record breaking sales in the city throughout the year. 8,16,051 new vehicles have been registered in Delhi. But there is also a big warning associated with this record. This increase is not due to public or shared transportation, but due to private vehicles, due to which the problem of traffic jams and pollution is likely to become more serious.

According to the data, out of these 8.16 lakh new registrations, about 7.2 lakh vehicles are for personal use. This means that most of the people thought it better to buy their personal car instead of bus, metro or shared means. About 75 percent of these vehicles run on petrol. This includes about 3.89 lakh petrol only vehicles and 1.99 lakh petrol-ethanol vehicles.

Number of diesel vehicles decreased

According to the report of Times of India, Amit Bhatt, India Managing Director of the International Council for Clean Transportation (ICCT), says that the number of diesel vehicles has definitely decreased, but the dependence on petrol is still very high. He said, “Such a high share of petrol vehicles shows that there is a need to further strengthen the policy regarding electric vehicles (EV). The increasing number of private petrol vehicles will increase the problem of traffic and pollution in Delhi instead of reducing it.”

According to Bhatt, if more vehicles run on whatever fuel, the congestion on the roads will definitely increase. But internal combustion engines i.e. petrol-diesel vehicles put additional pressure on air quality. It is clear from this that public transport has not yet become so reliable and convenient that people can abandon personal vehicles.

Focus increased on EV vehicles

Anil Chikhara, faculty at the Asian Institute of Transport Development, said that after the government made ethanol blending mandatory, most new petrol vehicles have automatically become ethanol compatible. In such a situation, petrol and petrol-ethanol vehicles should not be seen separately. He clearly said, “People are not taking any different decision, they are just following the rules. Now there is a need to push the EV policy more vigorously.”

Although the number of electric and CNG vehicles is increasing, their share is still much less than that of petrol vehicles. If seen month wise, from January to September the sales remained stable between 50,000 to 70,000. But in October this figure reached 1.14 lakh, while in November 88,804 vehicles were sold. According to officials, the major reasons for this were the festive season, year-end discounts, new model launches, relief in GST and easy financing. More than a quarter of the year’s total sales were recorded in October-November alone.

This much SUV was sold

The best selling vehicles in Delhi were motorcycles and scooters. About 5.31 lakh two-wheelers were sold, which is about two-thirds of the total sales. After this, the number of four-wheelers like cars and SUVs was 1.9 lakh. This shows the increasing income and changing aspirations of the middle class. At the same time, the number of electric rickshaws (44,362) and goods carrying vehicles was also good, indicating the growth of last-mile delivery and urban logistics. In contrast, sales of buses (2,810) and maxi cabs (174) were very low.

According to the Economist, increasing purchasing capacity, easy auto loans and discounts are expected to push sales to record levels in 2025. Apart from this, after Covid, there remained hesitation among the people regarding shared transportation, due to which the trend of buying private vehicles increased. Delhi’s bumper vehicle sales in 2025 not only reflect economic confidence, but it also makes it clear that if public transport, clean mobility and traffic management are not taken seriously, the city may have to pay a huge environmental price.
