Bharat NCAP 2.0- The Ministry of Road Transport has released the draft of Automotive Industry Standard Code 197 and has sought suggestions. From the year 2027, cars will have to undergo 5 crash tests instead of 3.
A major change in the new protocol is that now the safety of women passengers will be evaluated separately.New Delhi. The safety rating of cars in India is going to be stricter than ever. The strength and safety of the cars will now be tested in much more detail. The Road Transport Ministry has released the draft of BNCAP 2.0, the next phase of Bharat NCAP. The new rules will come into effect from October 2027. Under the new system, car companies will have to undergo five different crash tests instead of three to achieve a five-star safety rating. Currently, offset frontal, side and side-pole impact tests are conducted under Bharat NCAP. But two more tests, full frontal crash test and rear crash test, have also been added to the new protocol.

The objective of NCAP is to ensure that cars are capable of saving the lives of passengers and not become a hazard during a road accident. This change is important because now instead of only seeing how the car fares in an accident, it will also be seen what technology is present in the car to prevent an accident from happening.
You will get 5 star rating only if you pass these tests.
The new rating system will test cars on five broad safety parameters-
- safe driving ability
- accident prevention
- Crash Protection
- Safety of pedestrians and two-wheeler riders
- Safety of passengers after the accident
It includes features like Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Drought Detection, Lane Departure Warning and Forward Collision Alert. On the basis of these, vehicles will get better ratings.
Emphasis also on safety of women and children
A major change in the new protocol is that now the safety of women passengers will be assessed separately, which is not included in the current rules. Besides, safety rating will also be given for children of 6 and 10 years. For this, advanced types of crash test dummies will be used, which will enable better assessment of the impact in real conditions.
New guidelines for EV and petrol-diesel cars
In the new rules, special attention has also been given to post-accident safety. The risk of fire or electric shock is particularly high in electric vehicles, so testing of energy management, battery safety and passenger evacuation procedures will be mandatory. Apart from this, features like multi-collision braking, SOS or e-call facility and hazard warning system will also be evaluated as optional.
