Just wait a little! Bajaj preparing to bring ‘much’ cheaper Chetak
New Delhi. Bajaj Auto is preparing to start 2026 with a major expansion of its electric portfolio, which clearly shows its aggressive strategy in the EV market against Ola Electric and TVS Motor Company. Last year, Chetak had made its strong position as a top contender and now the company is going to launch a completely new Chetak model in January 2026. This launch is not just a model year update, but it is a strategic move, through which the company wants to take advantage of the success achieved in late 2025. In October, Chetak had emerged as the best selling electric scooter.
Strongest sale in October
The company sold more than 16,000 units that month, proving that the metal body design and durability image still attracts buyers, even as the market is flooded with cheap Chinese imports and new brands. The upcoming new model will be built on a new platform. Currently, the urban and premium variants of Chetak have attracted buyers looking for a metal body and a reliable commuter, but the new model will cater to an even broader market.
More affordable entry-level variants
There is talk in the industry that the company is planning to launch a more affordable entry-level variant, which will directly compete with the base models of Ola S1 For this, it is possible to keep the battery chemistry or features simple, so that the price can be kept below Rs 1 lakh. Currently, the price of Chetak Urban is around Rs 1.42 lakh, which makes it expensive for first time buyers.
keep an eye on youngsters
At the same time, there is also a possibility of bringing a high-performance variant. The top speed of the current Chetak is 63 km per hour and range is about 127 km, which is more according to urban needs, but less in terms of performance. A new “Sport” variant, with higher top speed, faster acceleration and longer range, could attract the youth, who are currently inclined towards the Ather 450 series. The price of Ather is above Rs 1.50 lakh, but it offers better performance and features. The company no longer wants to keep Chetak as a product of only a specific category. By bringing multiple variants with different prices and features, Bajaj is transforming Chetak from a stylish product to a complete family product, so that it can attract more and more customers amidst the increasing EV competition.
