New Delhi. India is moving towards a big change in the smartphone sector. The country may launch its own domestic mobile phone brand in the coming 12 to 18 months. This information was given by Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav during the World Economic Forum held in Davos, Switzerland. If this plan comes to fruition, then the long-established dominance of Chinese smartphone companies in the Indian market may face a tough challenge.
Mobile manufacturing network strengthened in India
In the last decade, India has made tremendous progress in the field of mobile phone manufacturing. While in the year 2014 there were only two mobile manufacturing units in the country, now this number has increased to more than 300. By December 2024, more than 99 percent of mobile phones sold in India will be made in the country, whereas in 2014-15 this figure was only 26 percent. This change reflects India’s growing industrial capacity.
Government’s full support for desi brands
According to Ashwini Vaishnav, India’s electronics ecosystem has now become so strong that it is not limited to mobile assembly only. Now the supply chain of essential mobile parts has also developed in the country. He said that the foundation for creating an end-to-end mobile brand from design to production is almost complete. The incentives given by the government to the manufacturing and semiconductor sector are also playing an important role in this.
More choices for customers, boost to employment
If Indian smartphone brands are successful, it will give customers more options and possibly affordable phones. Experts believe that indigenous brands will pay more attention to research, design and innovation, due to which technology will be developed according to local needs. Along with this, new jobs will also be created in design, R&D and manufacturing. This step will give new strength to the ‘Make in India’ campaign and can give India a stronger position in the global technology market.
