Converting a private car (white plate) to a commercial vehicle (yellow plate) is very useful for those who want to run their car as a taxi. This process is completely legal in India and it can be done through the Transport Department (RTO). However, if you use it commercially without conversion, the vehicle may be confiscated and a heavy fine may also be imposed. Come, let us know the complete process of conversion.

Step 1: First check eligibility and prepare

First of all check the life of your car. Generally, a car up to 5-8 years old can be easily converted in Delhi. If the car is on loan, take NOC (No Objection Certificate) from the bank. Get hypothecation removed from RC. Check the PUC, insurance and fitness of the car. If something is old, get it renewed first.

Step 2: Collect necessary documents

You need these documents: Original RC, valid PUC, existing insurance, address proof (Aadhaar/Voter ID), PAN card, 4-6 passport size photographs, Form 20 (for class change), commercial permit form, fitness certificate (can be a new one) and if there is a loan, then NOC is required. You may also be asked for parking proof for the taxi.

Step 3: Start Online Application (on Parivahan Portal)

https://vahan.parivahan.gov.in Go to. Select VAHAN Citizen Services. Select the state and your RTO. “Conversion of Vehicle” Or “Change of Vehicle Class” Select option. Enter car registration number, chassis number. Fill the form by entering OTP from mobile. Upload all the documents and pay the initial fees online. It is very important to take the application number and printout.

Step 4: Go to RTO office and deposit the fees

After online application, go to local RTO. Show physical documents. Pay the difference of road tax (private to commercial), permit fee, fitness charge, conversion fee. The total expense can range from ₹20,000 to ₹60,000+ depending on the model and RTO.

Step 5: Get the vehicle checked and fitness test done

RTO inspector will check your car. If there is any change in safety, emissions, then there can be problems. If everything goes well, you will get a new fitness certificate. If there is something missing, get it rectified first.

Step 6: Get a commercial permit

Apply for city taxi permit, contract carriage or tourist permit for taxi/cab. Follow City Taxi Scheme in Delhi. Permit fees range from ₹2,000-5,000. Permit will be given after approval.

Step 7: Get RC updated and new number plate installed

After all approval, RC will turn commercial. Get a new yellow plate (with black letters) installed. The old white plate will be removed. After changing RC, you cannot drive with white number plate.

Step 8: Update Insurance and Driver License

After getting the commercial RC, convert the insurance into a commercial policy, the premium for which will be higher. The driver’s license must also be commercial (CDL). To connect with platforms like Bharat Taxi or Ola/Uber, follow their guidelines.

This entire process can be done in 15-60 days. The conversion process mentioned above is as per the RTO of Delhi-NCR. There may be more or less rules in your place. Before starting the process, collect information from the government website or local RTO.
