Maruti Suzuki’s preparations complete, Wagon R Flex Fuel will arrive in 2026

New Delhi. Maruti Suzuki’s popular hatchback Wagon R is now going to come in a new avatar. The company recently announced in its Technology Strategy Briefing 2025 that the production of Flex Fuel Vehicles (FFV) will be started from the financial year 2025-26. This means that the Wagon R Flex Fuel model could be seen on the roads as early as 2026. This step has been taken keeping in mind the decarbonization target of the Government of India.

Engine and design changes
According to reports, the Wagon R Flex Fuel will get the same 1.2-litre petrol engine, which will be slightly upgraded to run on E20 to E85 ethanol blend. Minor changes can be seen on the exterior of the car, such as green inserts and ‘flex fuel’ badging. On the inside, the instrument cluster will be updated so that the fuel mixture level can be easily seen.

Steps related to government’s ethanol blending scheme
The Government of India has already implemented 20% ethanol blend (E20) in petrol and aims to increase it to 30% (E30) by 2030. In such a situation, the rollout of flex fuel vehicles is very important. The benefit to the customers from these vehicles will be that they will not have to worry about buying a new vehicle as per the future fuel policies.

What are flex fuel vehicles?
Flex Fuel Vehicles (FFVs) are vehicles whose engine and fuel system are specially designed. These can run on petrol and ethanol mixture of different proportions. Such vehicles not only emit less pollution but also reduce fuel costs in the long run. Experts believe that the launch of Wagon R Flex Fuel will prove to be a big step towards green technology in the Indian market.
