Road safety crisis: from awareness to responsibility

Every day about 474 people lose their lives on the roads of India. These accidents that happen every day are a tragedy that often do not make headlines, but leave lasting wounds on families and society. In the year 2023, more than 4.80 lakh road accidents were recorded in the country, in which about 1.73 lakh people died. Behind these statistics lie broken families, unfulfilled dreams and a grave human tragedy happening every day in cities, towns and on highways. Since the majority of accident victims are in the age group of 18 to 45 years, road safety is not only a public health issue but also a serious socio-economic challenge related to the productivity, livelihood and future of the country.

Despite such a serious crisis, constant warnings and extensive awareness campaigns, unsafe behavior and habits of people on the roads still persist. Speeding, being distracted while driving, not wearing helmet and seat belt, hasting and avoiding helping accident victims – all these have now become common things. These are not just individual lapses, but are indicative of haste, indiscipline and weakening of the sense of civic responsibility. The roots of road safety are not just infrastructure development, laws or punishments, but in the small decisions that people take in everyday life, especially when they are in a hurry or when they think “nothing will happen.”

Recognizing the gravity of this challenge, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, under the leadership of Hon’ble Shri Nitin Gadkari, is continuously strengthening the Road Safety Campaign (SSA) as a nationwide public awareness initiative. SSA 2026 marks a significant shift in the approach to road safety—not just a matter of concern but going beyond that to developing a sense of real responsibility and participation among citizens. Based on the theme of “From Care to Duty”, Road Safety Campaign 2026 is envisioned as a multi-level national movement combining introspection, dialogue, creative expression, technology and public participation. Its aim is to make road safety personalised, simple and practical, especially for youth and families – so that following the rules is not just a compulsion, but a value-based habit. The message is clear: security should not be an obligation to be performed out of fear, but a part of lifestyle.

Road Safety Campaign 4.0 At the center are four interconnected pillars:

Law: Obeying traffic rules, respecting signals, using helmets and safety equipment—understanding that laws are made not for inconvenience, but to protect life.

Duty: Road safety is not just following the rules, but it is our personal responsibility and moral obligation towards ourselves, our family and other road users.

shield: The role of technology and innovation is being further strengthened through Kavach, which includes artificial intelligence, smart enforcement, predictive analytics and technology related to vehicle safety which can help in preventing accidents by identifying upcoming threats in advance.

Revolution: Revolution leads to lasting change—where safe behavior becomes second nature, responsibility becomes habit, and road safety becomes a part of everyday life.

One of the main objectives of SSA 2026 is to inculcate road safety behavior right from childhood and continuously strengthen it. Parents, guardians, teachers and social role models deeply influence children’s behavior—be they pedestrians, cyclists or future drivers. Roads are among India’s largest shared public spaces, and their safety depends on our daily conduct as much as the safety of law, engineering and enforcement depends on our daily conduct.

Ultimately, safe roads will not be made only of cement and asphalt. They will be formed when haste will be replaced by discipline, indifference will be replaced by compassion and responsibility will become our natural tendency.

Let us make safety a habit every day and on every road—because it is our duty.
