Bezos brought TeraWave to defeat Musk's Starlink, know what it is

New Delhi. The space race has now become more interesting. The two richest people in the world are ready to face each other in space. Amazon owner Jeff Bezos’ aerospace company Blue Origin announced its mega-constellation project ‘TerraWave’ on January 21. Under this network, 5,280 satellites will be installed in low Earth orbit (LEO) and 128 satellites in medium orbit (MEO). According to Blue Origin, TerraWave’s main focus will be on organizations that need a lot of data and high-speed connectivity, rather than on general customers. Let us tell you that Musk’s Starlink is already working in this area.

TerraWave’s satellites will use radio frequency and laser technology. While its LEO satellites will provide speeds of up to 144 Gbps, the MEO satellites will be able to provide incredible internet speeds of up to 6 terabits per second (Tbps) with the help of lasers.

Special for business and governments

This network has been designed for those data centers and government departments that require secure, fast and large-scale data transfer. This will be different from Starlink and Amazon’s own project ‘Amazon Leo’, which are mainly for domestic users.

Work will start from 2027

Blue Origin plans to start construction of this network from the fourth quarter of 2027. This will directly challenge Musk’s Starlink (9,500+ satellites) and China’s mega-projects (13,000+ satellites).

Two different projects of Bezos

The interesting thing is that Bezos’s two companies will now be in the satellite internet market. While ‘Amazon Leo’ (formerly known as Project Kuiper) will be for the general public with 3,200 satellites, ‘Blue Origin’s TerraWave will be completely dedicated to professional and government use.

Musk’s Starlink reign

  • Musk’s ‘Starlink’: Elon Musk’s company Starlink is currently at the forefront in the world of satellite internet.
  • Huge network: More than 9,500 of Musk’s satellites are already present in space and are providing services in about 150 countries.
  • Door-to-door access: Starlink has made satellite internet accessible to the common man. In India too, Musk is preparing to launch his cheap ‘unlimited data plan’ (about ₹ 840/month) very soon.
  • Big plan for 2026: Musk is now working on bringing his satellites closer to the Earth so that the internet speed can be increased to 1Gbps and the connectivity can be made more secure.
