6 GHz band free, now Wi-Fi networks will be even faster

Last Updated:

The Government of India has issued an official notification to de-license a large portion of the 6 GHz spectrum band. After this decision, this frequency can now be used for Wi-Fi services without any additional fees or auction. This step will not only increase the speed of the internet but will also open the doors for future superfast technologies.

Now rocket-like Wi-Fi will be available in India! Internet world will change soon

New Delhi. Taking a big step in the interest of Internet users, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has freed 500 MHz frequency of 6 GHz band from license restrictions. This process, which started in May last year, has now been finalized. This decision of the government directly means that now the Wi-Fi network of your home and office will be more powerful and stable than before.

According to the notification, no license will now be required for low power wireless access systems in the 5925-6425 MHz band. This decision has come amid the long-running tussle between American tech giants (Apple, Meta, Amazon) and domestic telecom companies (Jio). Let us understand how this decision will benefit the common people?

Superfast speeds and less interruptions

Till now, in the Wi-Fi bands we are using (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), the speed used to reduce as the number of devices increases. Now with the availability of 6 GHz band, the ‘traffic jam’ of the Internet will end and you will get the same speed on Wi-Fi as you get on fiber cable.

Paving the way for Wi-Fi 7

This decision will lay the foundation for next generation technologies like Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 in India. Its biggest benefit will be for those who do online gaming, high-definition video calling or 4K-8K video streaming.

Boon for smart homes

There will be no signal drop even if dozens of devices like smart TV, mobile, laptop and CCTV are connected simultaneously in the house. Hundreds of people in offices and public places will be able to use high-speed internet simultaneously without any hindrance.

Steps towards 6G

According to Bharat Bhatia, President of ITU-APT Foundation, this decision will not only strengthen 5G services, but will also prepare India for future 6G technology. This will also give an opportunity to indigenous broadband equipment manufacturing companies to compete at the global level.

Telecom versus tech companies’ stance

While tech companies like Apple and Intel were demanding to free the entire 1200 MHz spectrum, Reliance Jio argued that it should be auctioned. At present, the government has found a middle path by freeing up its lower part, so that the general public can directly benefit from the technology.
