The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has said that 98.42% of the Rs 2,000 notes in circulation have been returned. In a statement, RBI said that 98.42% of the Rs 2,000 notes have been deposited or exchanged. This means that now only a very small number of notes are left in circulation.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes from circulation on May 19, 2023. The total value of these notes in circulation at that time was Rs 3.56 lakh crore. According to the data released by the Reserve Bank, by January 31, 2026, this amount has reduced to only Rs 5,609 crore. The report said that in the last two and a half years many people have returned their Rs 2,000 notes to the banking system.

From October 7, 2023, the facility to deposit or exchange Rs 2,000 notes in bank accounts has been made available in all branches of the Reserve Bank of India located across the country. From October 9, 2023, Rs 2,000 notes are being accepted in all 19 offices of the Reserve Bank of India and deposited into bank accounts. Still, those who have Rs 2,000 notes can visit these offices and deposit them directly into their bank accounts.

If you deposit Rs 2,000 notes in Basic Savings Bank Deposit (BSBD) or Jan Dhan account, for deposits of Rs 50,000 or more you will have to provide your PAN number. You are not required to provide PAN number for deposits of less than Rs 50,000 in a day. The Reserve Bank of India has clarified that Rs 2,000 notes are still legal tender.

That means, it is not illegal to possess them. The central bank has advised the public to deposit the remaining notes as soon as possible to avoid future problems. The Reserve Bank has also said that the process is almost complete. The process of demonetization of Rs 2,000 notes is almost complete.
